CHAPTER 16

Noah

Mia spent the week in hospital and I barely left her side the whole time. Callan improved daily and by Friday he was able to leave the NICU, but they want him to remain in hospital for a few more days to gain some weight. He’s feeding well and able to join his brother and sister in Mia’s !!br0ken!! Unfortunately, her Dad and sister had to leave and I drove them to the airport yesterday, hugging them both as we said our goodbyes. They’re great people and we got on like a house on fire, even if he does support the wrong footy team.

We’re resting on the bed watching some daytime movie when Christine surprises us with the news that we can take the babies home in the morning and she’ll arrange for a midwife to visit daily to check on Mia. She has had the suction drain, IV and catheter removed and is allowed to get up and shower or go to the bathroom, but she still needs to rest up and remain on medication for a short while.

I ring Mum who’s still at our house and ask her to bring in the Sahara in the morning as well as Mia’s SUV as they’ll need to drive it home because mine will be full of babies. She’s ecstatic about the news and promises to be in early so that we can get them organized.

Mia and I spend the night alone with the three of them, getting used to their routine. She feeds two of them at a time and I give the other one a bottle of expressed milk, then burp them in turn and change them and put them down.

We decided not to make a nursery at home because after some long discussions with Mum and Dad they decided to buy a small transportable cottage and put it near the big farm house for themselves, and we’ll move into the big house as soon as I can arrange it with work and when Mia’s strong enough. In the meantime, we’ve put one cot in our bedroom and plan to use that for the three of them till we move.

Mum and Dad’s cottage is nearly completed and should be done in a month or so they think, and it’ll probably take that long before we’re organized. to move as well. The house in Perth will still be there for when we visit or when Scarlett comes home. The babies are going to need constant pediatrician check-ups for a while and I’ll be commuting back and forth so it makes sense to keep it.

****

The morning arrives quickly and brings with it a dark rainy day, not very common, even in winter, in Perth. We’re both excited and up early, showered and have the babies fed as we wait for Mum and Dad to arrive.

I already installed their car seats a while ago and we found a triple stroller for them that has seats, each one stacked higher behind the one in front, so that it doesn’t take up much room and its light enough for Mia to use later on.
